Telecommunications is the electronic transmission of information through various technologies. Computing is how the information is stored, processed, and transferred. Both are important for the world to function, which is why constant improvements are made to ensure that both areas are thriving. As college students, we are involved with telecommunications and computing literally every day. This is a big reason as to why we decided to investigate this topic.
There is a constant theme of making the processing and transferring of data and information faster and more efficient. We want to investigate how that is happening, and the benefits but also consequences that it could have in the world today.
There are a lot of aspects within telecommunications and computing, but three items that have already caught our eyes: 5G, Quantum Computing, and 6G which will eventually replace 5G a couple years from now. All three are prime examples of the innovation that is constantly occurring throughout the world. Quantum computing uses quantum physics to perform complex tasks and solve complex problems.  One common form of quantum computing that we are all familiar with is forecasting. 5G is what we currently use for our mobile network, it is meant to connect everyone and everything together. It allows for data transfers at faster speeds and lower latency. Phone poles, light poles, and even the exterior of buildings are a few examples of potential locations for 5G satellites. With 5G's advancements, 200-foot cell towers are no longer necessary, making it more similar to Bluetooth than previous generations., 6G is already awaiting in the wings and is what we will use a couple years from now.
In terms of stakeholders, almost everyone will be affected in some shape or form. Phone and internet service providers are the major players within telecommunications and computing. It has always been a competition among them to have the best 5G availability and reach around the world. This competition benefits us individual consumers as we get the very best from our providers. There are many industries and domains that are in play. The tech and manufacturing industries are big ones. This is due to the unwavering desire for flexibility and efficiency. 5G can help the manufacturing industry increase in both areas, it will further push automation which will increase worker safety. Transportation, financial services, and media/entertainment are other domains as well.
There are adjacent domains that we have to look at as well. Military and Public Safety are two examples. There is some controversy within telecommunications and computing as well. Some people are concerned about what 5G might do to a person's health. However, these concerns have been debunked. Some organizations like the NIH and FDA have issued statements claiming that there is no evidence to support the notion that 5G is harmful to human health. However, there are other concerns about the effects 5G can have on aviation and weather forecasting. We will have to investigate telecommunications completely, both the good parts and the bad parts.
